The biggest priority for the Los Angeles Rams this offseason was improving the secondary, and they found one heck of a way to do it. All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie has been traded to the Rams from the Kansas City Chiefs for a package that includes the 29th pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

McDuffie was entering the final year of his rookie contract and is expected to sign a long-term deal with the Rams to lock down their No. 1 corner spot for the foreseeable future. It’s a mammoth move that fixes Los Angeles’ biggest weakness, will help to reign back in the dominance of the Seattle Seahawks in 2026, and gives the team one of the best young cornerbacks in the NFL.

Let’s break this deal down from both sides.

Los Angeles Rams

There is no way to look at this other than an absolute home run. Even in a down year, McDuffie was still a Top 10 cornerback — and his struggles were far more a product of inconsistency across the Chiefs’ defense than anything he did in isolation. This is about keeping the window for Super Bowl contention open, and while the Rams were already in the mix, this cements that even further.

Perhaps more importantly, it gives the organization a lot of wiggle room when it comes to the NFL Draft. Prior to trading for McDuffie they were penciled in as an obvious cornerback pick at No. 12, which they got from the Falcons last year. Now they have the freedom to either double-down at corner and really amp up their secondary, take a pass rusher to bolster the defense further, or perhaps throw a curve ball at go quarterback to solidify their succession play in a couple of years.

It’s a great position to be in, and the Rams knocked it out of the park.

Kansas City Chiefs

This one hurts. McDuffie was the Chiefs’ most important defensive player after Chris Jones, but salary cap constraints made it impossible to project a future where he could stay on the roster while keeping the flexibility to sign other upcoming free agents.

No point in sugar coating it: The Chiefs got much, much worse as a result of this. The trade compensation isn’t terrible, but it’s not amazing either for a Pro Bowl corner. The first round pick coming at No. 29 means they won’t get someone who can contribute immediately, and not getting another early round pick until 2027 hurts — especially if this deal means the Rams are back picking at the end of the round once more.

Typically we see the Chiefs winning trades, but not this one. One late round first and some throw in picks for an All-Pro corner is not an equitable trade. Perhaps this is part of a larger plan by Kansas City to flip their picks for immediate help, but as it stands it feels like Kansas City is going to take another step backwards.
