Check a box score and you'll see that San Diego went down 12-0 in the first quarter against the lowly Raiders today. But how they did it is the part that is amazing.
Chargers Submit Entry In Worst Quarter Ever Competition Against Raiders
↵
First, the Chargers went three and out, and the Raiders blocked a punt for a safety. Then Mike Scifres kicked the safety punt out of bounds, giving Oakland the ball at midfield; the Raiders turned that drive into a field goal. San Diego responded with another three and out — but that punt got blocked and returned for a touchdown. Fortunately, the Chargers went on to put two long drives together in the quarter. Unfortunately, both of them ended with fumbles in the Oakland red zone.
↵It could have been one of those terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad days for the Chargers, but they’ve righted the ship since that disastrous first period. The Chargers now lead 14-12 in the second quarter, and are otherwise throttling the still-hapless Raiders.
