New 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Johnson made it his mission statement to get the ball into the hands of the struggling offense’s playmakers once he took over for the fired Jimmy Raye.
Michael Crabtree Gets First Touchdown Of 2010 Season To Give 49ers 7-0 Lead
At least as it pertains to receiver Michael Crabtree, it has proven effective. After three weeks of next to no production out of Crabtree under Raye - with only three catches for 44 yards in the team’s first two games - the 49ers top young receiver has picked it up each of the two weeks since Raye departed.
in the Week 4 loss to the Falcons, Crabtree caught five passes 58 yards, hardly spectacularly numbers, but both season highs for him. Already in the Week 5 Sunday night game against the Eagles, Crabtree has been more of a presence. On the team’s opening scoring drive, he caught two passes for 18 yards, including the game’s first score.
So, while Crabtree may still not fulfill his huge promise for 2010, he likely won’t be as big a disappointment as some have feared recently.
