The Topsy Turvy, And Mostly Fumbly, Sunday Night Of Alex Smith

As has been their M.O. all season, the 49ers have killed themselves time and again with turnovers committed just as it seemed like the team would be able to capture the momentum or even the game itself. Sunday night against the Eagles has been no different. Through the midpoint of the fourth quarter, the 49ers have committed four turnovers, two from Frank Gore fumbles, one from an Alex Smith interception and another on an Alex Smith fumble.

After the fumble that resulted in the Eagles taking a 24-10 lead, the 49ers got the ball back and went through a particularly anemic three and out. On one play, Smith hit Gore in the shoulder pad for an incompletion on a screen.

The crowd chad had enough and could be heard on the broadcast chanting “we want Carr!” And indeed, David Carr, the other former no. 1 overall selection quarterback the 49ers have on their roster, was shown warming up. Yet when the San Francisco offense came back onto the field, it was still Alex Smith under center.

And in keeping with San Francisco’s habit of staying in games long enough to keep fans expectations artificially elevated, Smith responded by driving the offense the length of the field and hitting Vernon Davis on an amazing throw between double coverage.
