Vikings Vs. Jets: Brett Favre Misses Percy Harvin, But Not Dwight Lowery, On Decisive Drive

Favrehandssbn_medium

After taking nearly three quarters off, Brett Favre and the Vikings offense found their legs late and made a game of it on Monday night. Brett Favre got his 500th touchdown and his 70,000 passing yard. At that point, it looked like a brief glimmer of production, but Favre kept pouring it on.

After Favre added another touchdown throw, the Jets finally reached the end zone after settling for field goals five times when Shonn Greene broke free on a huge John Conner block for a 23-yard touchdown run. The Jets, despite controlling most of the game, struggled to move the ball through all evening. Mark Sanchez completed less than half of his passes and the Jets, holding a 22-20 lead with little over two minutes remaining, opted to pass the ball to try to ice the game, when they had been able to run effectively all game.

The Vikings, then, got the ball with a chance to win, down less than a field goal with about a minute and a half remaining. On the second play of the series, Darrelle Revis fell down covering Percy Harvin, leaving the Vikings slot receiver open for a potentially huge gain, but Farve lofted the ball well over his head. On the next play, Lowery picked Favre and sealed the victory.

Given how much ESPN was trying to liken this game to other dramatic moments in Favre’s career, such as the game after his father died, and the way the announcers tried to pin nearly every mistake on an injured elbow, one shudders to think how exactly the network may have handled it if the Vikings completed the comeback. For better or worse, we’ll never know now.
