The NFL Rulebook: Excerpts From Roger Goodell’s Unseen Masterpiece

The NFL’s rulebook is not available for public consumption on the Internet. Major League Baseball has its rules, in full, available online. The same can be said of the NBA and the NHL. The best the NFL offers us for free is a spliced-up series of summaries. If, for example, someone cites Rule 12, Section 2, Article 8, and you want to look up the actual rule and not a brief summary, you’ll have to throw down ten bucks on the official book.

Nobody wants to pay ten dollars for a set of rules they should be able to get for free, and so nobody has read the NFL rulebook. Commissioner Roger Goodell himself, in fact, took the trouble to bypass the league’s committees and write the official rulebook on his own, and yet the players haven’t read it. Neither have the referees.

Whenever controversy arises, as it has this week in the aftermath of the concussions of Week 6, Goodell has often been the go-to whipping boy. Well, I’ve decided to give him a fair shake by posting some scattered excerpts from his rulebook.

Unbeknownst to the football world, Goodell has introduced some rules that can only be described as radical. Here are some of them. Judge for yourself.
