Shawne Merriman appears headed to Buffalo. Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com reported via league sources that the Bills planned to claim LB Shawne Merriman off the waiver wire. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that they did.
Shawne Merriman Reportedly Claimed By Bills Off Waiver Wire; Plans To Report
Merriman now has five days to report to the Bills. If he doesn't report, the Bills can send the "five-day letter" made famous last year when Richard Seymour didn't immediately report to the Raiders after being traded.
Schefter reports that Merriman plans to report “for now.” There’s no reason for him not to report at this point. He’s on a one-year contract and the biggest question mark is his health. So he likely wants to stay healthy and play the rest of the season in order to be in line for a free agent contract in 2011.
The Bills are now on the hook for the remainder of his $3.69 million salary for the 2010 season. The Bills host the Bears on Sunday and Merriman is not expected to play in that game.
As SB Nation’s Buffalo Rumblings points out, there are plenty of questions still to be answered.
It’s unclear precisely how the Bills plan to use him; will he take Moats’ reps, will he play more end in four-man looks, or will the Bills now transition back to the 3-4? Either way, things just got a touch more interesting over at One Bills Drive.
