Quite literally, Brett Favre may have saved Brad Childress’ coaching job today. Which is ironic, given that most people seem to believe Favre isn’t particularly fond of Childress. (We know Randy Moss isn’t.)
NFL Scores And Results, Week 9: Brett Favre, Vikings Find A Way To Beat Cardinals
Favre led the Minnesota Vikings on a fourth-quarter surge to erase a 14-point Arizona Cardinals lead, completing a career-high 36 passes for a career-high 446 yards in the process. His 25-yard scoring strike to tight end Visanthe Shiancoe tied the game late in regulation, and Ryan Longwell kicked a 35-yard field goal in overtime to close out a 27-24 victory.
Arizona was able to build their 24-10 lead thanks to two Favre interceptions, a Percy Harvin fumble that was returned 30 yards for a touchdown by Michael Adams, a 96-yard kickoff return for a score from LaRod Stephens-Howling, and an efficient (if unspectacular) outing from quarterback Derek Anderson. Anderson threw a touchdown pass to rookie receiver Andre Roberts that gave the Cardinals a 14-10 lead at the half.
For a time - that time being when the Cardinals had a commanding lead on Minnesota’s home turf - it seriously appeared that Childress was coaching in his final game with the Vikings. Favre’s huge game, however, has probably held that inevitability possibility off for another week. With the win, both teams are now 3-5 on the season.
