The Indianapolis Colts did what they had to do on Thursday Night Football and beat the Tennessee Titans, 30-28, staying in the NFL playoff picture. That means the Colts move to 7-6 on the season and just a half game behind the Jacksonville Jaguars, who are set to face the Oakland Raiders this weekend, in the AFC South. The Colts are likely looking at needing to win out to make the playoffs, and even then they may need some tiebreaker help.
NFL Playoff Picture: Colts Knocking On Jaguars’ Door; Titans Plummet In AFC South
The Colts’ victory sets up a showdown next week with the Jaguars in Indianapolis. A Colts victory would keep them alive -- and in control of their own destiny -- and a Jaguars victory would nearly close the door on the AFC South.
The Titans meanwhile continued to push themselves further away from the NFL playoff picture with Thursday’s loss. The Titans now sit at 5-8 on the season, losing their sixth consecutive game after starting 5-2. They’re out of the playoff discussion.
The AFC South is turning into a competitive division but not with the teams we thought would be there. The Colts and Texans were expected to be battling for the division title. I'm not sure many people gave Jacksonville a chance (at least I didn't). But here they sit, with four weeks to go, in first place. With next week's game, both the Colts and Jaguars control their own destiny.
The Jaguars remaining schedule includes this weekend’s game against the Raiders, at Indianapolis, hosting the Redskins and traveling to Houston. The Colts remaining schedule includes Jacksonville, a trip to Oakland and hosting the Titans.
Here’s how the AFC South standings look:
1. Jaguars (7-5)
2. Colts (7-6)
3. Texans (5-7)
4. Titans (5-8)
