Early in the Redskins' game against the Buccaneers today, Ryan Torain was running extremely well and the Redskins appeared nearly unstoppable on offense.
VIDEO: Redskins Fail To Convert Game-Tying Extra Point, Lose To Buccaneers, Are Probably Cursed
Naturally, the Redskins proceeded to build a 10-3 lead, then cough it up, then score a touchdown with nine seconds left, then screw up the game-tying extra point.
SB Nation DC’s Mike Prada is pointing to holder Hunter Smith as the culprit in this moment of Redskins failure, because Smith wasn’t able to corral a high snap, but this loss surprises absolutely no one who follows the team.
I’m not sure how many different hexes are on the ‘Skins — possible reasons for hexes would include continuing to use the Redskins name in 2010, being owned by Dan Snyder, being one of Washington’s many frequently disappointing sports outfits, and starting Donovan McNabb at quarterback — but whichever ones are in place are clearly potent.
The 'Skins have five wins this season, none by more than five points, and have lost by single digits in three other games. They've fallen to the Rams and the Lions, and got eviscerated by Michael Vick on Monday Night Football. Their highest-paid player, Albert Haynesworth, has been alternately ineffective and suspended; their high-profile off-season acquisition, Donovan McNabb has been underwhelming at the helm.
And what, exactly, is reason for hope in Washington? Better to start refining that culture of pessimism with a few completely hair-brained curses. Hey, it worked for Boston.
