San Diego is still a longshot to win the AFC West. But the Chargers sent a message to the Chiefs on Sunday: we’re not going to go away.
NFL Week 14 Scores And Results: Chargers Blank Chiefs, 31-0
Led by a stifling defense that limited the Chiefs to just 67 total yards, the Chargers beat Kansas City 31-0.
Philip Rivers threw for two touchdowns for San Diego, and Mike Tolbert and Ryan Mathews each had over 60 yards and a touchdown on the ground. The Chargers would only have needed one.
Playing without Matt Cassel, who had an emergency appendectomy earlier this week, the Chiefs struggled mightily to even move the chains. Brodie Croyle and Tyler Palko were utterly ineffective under center, combining to complete just nine passes, and the lack of a passing threat allowed the Chargers to stack the box and slow down Jamaal Charles, who had just 40 yards on 10 carries.
The Chiefs still have a one-game lead on the Chargers in the AFC West, and finish with a trip to St. Louis and home games against the Titans and Raiders. But the Chargers would win the division if they win out and the Chiefs drop one of those three games, according to FanHouse’s Chris Tomasson.
