49ers Vs. Chargers, Video: Mike Tolbert Loses Helmet, Gets Crushed By A Blocker

There's a reason NFL players wear helmets and San Diego Chargers fullback Mike Tolbert found out the hard way. Against the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday Night Football, Tolbert lost his hat while running downfield to cover a punt. Since it's his job to make the play, he kept on going, looking like a mad-man while streaking down the field without a helmet. Tolbert failed to keep his helmet-less head on a swivel, taking a blindside block while chasing Ted Ginn.

Observe.

That’s dedication, my friends. Nothing strikes fear in an opponent’s heart like a crazy man chasing them down without a helmet.

Tolbert was fine, somehow avoiding a concussion and finishing the game. The San Diego running back finished with 46 yards and a touchdown while looking no worse for wear.

The helmet-less pursuit did remind me of a better play made by a guy playing with no head protection, however. Just a year ago, TCU’s Tanner Brock lost his helmet during a punt return. Instead of chasing the ball-carrier like Tolbert, Brock was laying the punishment, destroying a defender with a block. Check out his face just before the moment of impact.
