Well, DeSean Jackson no longer has the most amazing kick return of the day. That's because Patriots offensive lineman Dan Connolly just defied logic, common sense, and decency — and returned a kickoff all the way to the Packers 4.
VIDEO: Dan Connolly’s Kickoff Return May Be Best Fat Guy Return Ever
Connolly’s runback covered 71 yards and was, unsurprisingly, the longest kickoff return by an offensive lineman in NFL history. It is also maybe the single funniest play I have ever seen on a football field.
Connolly had three previous returns for 35 yards, somehow, but nothing will ever touch him fielding Mason Crosby's kick, covering it with both arms like a loaf of bread, and then breaking free in the open field, cutting back, and giving the Patriots a goal to go possession. Refrigerator Perry's fever dreams weren't this good.
Best of all, the return actually set up a Patriots touchdown — and that touchdown might be the turning point in this game. Had the Pats not scored before the half, the Packers would have been able to build on a 17-7 lead with the second half kickoff.
Instead, an offensive lineman gave the Patriots a chance for a cheap touchdown with an instantly legendary play. “That’s unbelievable!” Cris Collinsworth said. It’s impossible not to agree.
