New Orleans Saints kicker Garrett Hartley, whose 29-yard overtime miss against the Atlanta Falcons has become a significant chapter in this NFC South rivalry’s history, booted a 52-yard field goal to put the Saints on the board first. New Orleans completed an eight-play, 37-yard drive.
Saints Vs. Falcons: Garrett Hartley Kicks 52-Yarder To Give New Orleans 3-0 Lead
The Falcons have only one first down so far, leaning on Michael Turner despite his early lack of effectiveness. In the week three meeting between these teams, Turner didn’t start to take over until the second half. Offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey might be the NFL’s most patient play caller, so expect more runs.
The Saints, however, are not running. Drew Brees has completed 11 of his 14 passes for 61 yards, including an 18-yard completion to Lance Moore while facing a heavy blitz. Midweek Twitter firestarter Roddy White has two catches for 36 yards, and was whistled along with Jabari Greer for the ultra-rare dual pass interference call. That’s a new one, all right.
New Orleans is winning the yardage battle, 65 to 41. Neither team has converted a third down.
