This NFL season has had more than a few arguments about the continued viability of a league that seems to churn through its players with ever more violent collisions. But, beyond mere helmet-to-helmet hits, the NFL will always have to deal with one question: what happens when big guys hit little guys hard?
VIDEO: Was Rolando McClain’s Huge Helmet-To-Helmet Hit On Darren Sproles Avoidable?
↵Rolando McClain’s huge hit on Darren Sproles brings up both issues.
↵
↵Obviously, McClain and Sproles butt helmets, and Sproles gets the worst of it. But McClain’s actually using decent hitting technique if Sproles is even a hair over six feet, by dropping his shoulders and getting low, but it’s the height disparity between the two players that produces the helmet-to-helmet contact, not any malicious intent.
↵What can the NFL do about that? Not much, except try to make helmets safer and hope that players like Sproles — who has a concussion and won’t return to the Chargers’ game against the Raiders — can recover from these hits. And that’s the scary part.
