The NFL has taken a serious stance on hits to the helmet, threatening hefty fines and suspensions for offending players. Yet the hits keep coming, even going unpenalized at times. Sunday night was one of those times, when Heath Miller took a vicious blow to the head while in a defenseless position.

Here, you see Miller going to the ground in a defenseless position as he is leveled by a Baltimore Ravens' defender. While the hit wasn't helmet-to-helmet, it was a direct blow to the head by Jameel McClain. The Ravens linebacker leads with his shoulder and forearm, but makes direct contact with Miller's head, snapping his neck back in the process.
↵And yet, the play went unpunished. With all the emphasis on dangerous hits, you’d think NFL officials would make hits like these a point of emphasis during the course of a game. Instead, the NFL will make the final call this week, deciding on whether to fine or suspend McClain for the hit.
