After Josh McDaniels Is Fired, John Elway And Gary Kubiak Land On Broncos Wishlist

The Denver Broncos on Monday fired head coach Josh McDaniels because owner Pat Bowlen was "not satisfied with the results" of McDaniels 11-17 record in Denver. The move was somewhat surprising because of the timing but also expected (eventually). So now Denver looks to figure out what to do with the vacant head coaching job as well as other moves in the organization.

On Monday after news of McDaniels firing broke, word was leaked in the Denver area that former Broncos great John Elway was dining with Bowlen. Elway’s desire to get back into football in some front office capacity is known.

Michael Lombardi of NFL.com reports now that, indeed, the Broncos would like to hire Elway in some capacity. And not just Elway -- former Broncos offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak, too.

Sources close to the Broncos told NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi that the team is expected to approach former Broncos Super Bowl hero John Elway for a front-office position and that if Gary Kubiak were available, he would be the team’s first choice to coach the team next season.

Kubiak was in Denver before bolting to Houston to coach the Texans, who appear likely to miss the playoffs once again.

This would be an odd hiring on both accounts to say the least. Elway has no front office NFL experience so I’m assuming they wouldn’t give him a role with significant decision-making. And Kubiak was demonstrated that he can’t take a talented Houston squad to the playoffs. But, hey, they were part of the last Super Bowl team in Denver.
