NFL Week 3, Jets Vs. Dolphins: Miami Falls Short On Pivotal Last-Minute Drive

The Dolphins’ Jason Allen nearly came away with a game-changing interception on the Jets’ final meaningful drive in their Sunday night victory. After further review, however, it turned out the ball caromed off the grass for an incomplete pass. And thus went away Miami’s best chance of beating the Jets to advance to 3-0 and hold sole possession of first place in the AFC East.

Braylon Edwards, bearing the full brunt of controversy stemming from his DWI arrest last week, had only two receptions against Miami, but both were of mammoth impact. The first went for 67-yards to regain the lead for the Jets after the Dolphins had taken a 17-14 lead with a six minute plus drive to begin the 3rd quarter.

The second Edwards reception didn’t go for a score, but still figured heavily in New York’s victory. On the Jets’ last touchdown drive, Mark Sanchez hit Edwards for a 20-yard completion on a 3rd down and 10. Once again, it was Jason Allen making a pivotal mistake. On Edwards’ first reception, Allen stumbled to let Edwards streak for a long touchdown. On the second, Allen failed to realize he had safety help. Had he played underneath the receiver, he could have easily made a play on the ball. Instead, it was completed and the Jets were on their way to victory.

Miami, which last year lost a primetime game where, after dominating the majority of the game against the Colts, could not convert a two-minute drill when it mattered most. While Miami was able quickly to move the ball into the red zone, the drive sputtered out from there and Chad Henne’s 4th down and goal pass was intercepted by Drew Coleman.

With a victory secured, Rex Ryan decided to celebrate by giving a Gatorade bath to former Dolphin Jason Taylor. Of course he did.
