San Diego Chargers defensive coordinator will become the fourth head coach of the Carolina Panthers, according to FOX’s Jay Glazer and the San Diego Union-Tribune’s Kevin Acee. Glazer tweeted that the Panthers have called the three other candidates — reported previously to be Rob Ryan, Perry Fewell, and Greg Manusky — to let them know the search was headed elsewhere.
Ron Rivera To Be Hired As Carolina Panthers Head Coach, According To Reports
Acee reports Rivera has already “put out feelers” in an effort to construct his new head coaching staff. NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora reports the offensive coordinator spot could come down to Colts assistant Ron Turner and Chargers tight end coach Rob Chudzinski, both of whom have worked with Rivera.
The Panthers are a daunting turnaround project, even for a coach as renowned as Rivera. They finished last in the league in offense, meaning it will be even more critical than usual for the defensive-minded Rivera to find an offensive coordinator he trusts.
Chargers fans are disappointed and Panthers fans are happy, if that tells you anything about the hire.
