San Diego Chargers defensive coordinator Ron Rivera has been hired as head coach of the Carolina Panthers, and will be introduced in a press conference at 5 p.m. on Tuesday. Rivera was rumored to be the front-runner for the job after the Panthers and John Fox parted way after the 2010 season.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the hiring was official on Twitter, confirming reports from earlier in the day.

Carolina will be Rivera’s first stint as a head coach in the NFL after years of working as an assistant. He spent the last three years in charge of the Charger’s defense, adopting the 3-4 scheme while in San Diego. Before that, Rivera spent three seasons as the Chicago Bears’ defensive coordinator.
