Sunday’s Jets-Patriots game will the second playoff contest of the weekend to feature two division rivals who really, really dislike one another. There have been quite a few sensationalist sub-plots to be enjoyed in the days leading up to the game, one of which is Patriots receiver Wes Welker’s jabs at Jets coach Rex Ryan and his supposed foot fetish.
NFL Playoffs, Jets Vs. Patriots: Bart Scott Says Wes Welker’s ‘Days In A Uniform Will Be Numbered’
Well, despite Ryan’s low-key response to Welker’s antics, Jets linebacker Bart Scott isn’t taking the matter lightly. Suddenly, comical needling has escalated into physical threats. From Pro Football Talk:
“I’ll tell you what,” Bart Scott said via Newsday when asked about Wes Welker’s foot routine Thursday. “Be very careful what you say about our coach. His [Welker’s] days in a uniform will be numbered. Put it like that.”
Promising to put Welker in his place, or something to that effect, would have been acceptable, but threatening to end someone’s career is a great way to ensure that your every move on the field will be scrutinized. On Sunday, we’ll see exactly what Scott meant by these words.
