The Sporting News top 10 greatest NFL teams includes a laundry list of Hall of Famers, from the great Cowboys teams of the 1990's to the 49ers in the 1980's to the Steelers teams of the 1970's. There are four teams from the 1970's starting with the 1972 Dolphins and then from 1976-1978 we saw three more of the NFL's greatest teams -- 1976 Raiders, 1977 Cowboys and 1978 Steelers.

The Cowboys were the only franchise appearing on the list twice -- the 1977 team was the 9th greatest team and the 1992 team was the 7th greatest team. You could probably make an argument that the 1993 Cowboys could be on there as well. After 1992, there is just one more team making the list up to present day -- 2004 Patriots. That was their third Super Bowl victory in four years.
SN is running a bracket where fans can vote on the NFL’s greatest teams. It’s set up like a tournament, so the first two matchups are the 1992 Cowboys vs. 1976 Raiders and the 2004 Patriots vs. 1977 Cowboys.
I wasn’t around for some of those great 1970s teams so my opinion will be biased, but I’d take the 1992 Cowboys over most teams because of that massive offensive line making holes for one of the greatest running backs we’ve seen in Emmitt Smith. Add in there Michael Irvin and Troy Aikman, and that’s a tough team to beat
The 2004 Patriots, at least on paper, aren’t nearly as strong as the 1977 Cowboys. The Tom Brady-led Patriots had a way of finding a way to win so this one’s a coin toss for me.
