2011 East-West Shrine Game Final Score: East Dominates, 25-8

The 2011 East-West Shrine Game turned into a showcase for one team. It wasn’t the West.

The East team forced three fumbles and scored 19 points in the first half, then cruised to a 25-8 victory. Syracuse running back Delone Carter, who ran for a touchdown, was named the game’s offensive MVP.

Richmond defensive end Martin Parker took defensive MVP honors after recording two sacks and forcing a fumble.

Other big names had varied results. Virginia Tech’s Tyrod Taylor was adequate at quarterback for the East, completing four of five passes for 59 yards, and North Carolina defensive tackle Marvin Austin pounced on a late fumble to score a defensive touchdown for the East.

But two of the other big-name quarterbacks struggled: both Wisconsin’s Scott Tolzien and Texas A&M’s Jerrod Johnson fumbled balls that turned into scoring plays for the other defense. And Auburn’s Wes Byrum, who hit a field goal as time expired to give the Tigers their first BCS National Championship, made just one of three field goals in the game.

Few West players stood out on a day when the West managed just four first downs. Idaho quarterback Nathan Enderle threw for the West’s only touchdown, but completed just six of 12 throws.
