Remember The Wes Welker Foot Press Conference? He’d Like To Forget It

No matter what happens two weeks from now in the Super Bowl, one of the more indelible memories from the 2011 NFL playoffs will be Wes Welker's ridiculous foot press conference.

Not just because it was genuinely hilarious, but... Wes Welker!!! Who knew he had it in him?

The gritty, selfless, scrappy grit-machines of the world aren’t usually the ones to talk smack. So I guess we shouldn’t be that surprised that Welker now regrets his decision to enter the fray in the first place:

“As much as you might want to get enticed into that stuff, at the end of the day, it’s just not worth it.”

See, some players are able to use trash talk as a springboard to success. Others, not so much. And while Welker never mentions the Jets playoff game here, you get the sense there's some regret behind these words:

“At the end of the day, it’s about football -- that’s what it’s supposed to be about. That’s all that matters. It’s concentrating on your job and what you do, and not concentrating on the riff-raff that goes with all that other stuff. ... It’s just not worth it. It’s not always easy to keep a lid on it, but at the same time, there’s a greater goal, and that’s winning the game and playing good football. That’s what matters. All that other stuff doesn’t matter at the end of the day.”

So can some players talk trash better than others? Did New England’s scrappy grit-machine lose sight of the goal? And most importantly, doesn’t this prove the Jets trash talk totally worked?
