Franchise Tag Expected To Be Available Despite CBA Uncertainty

The franchise tag in the NFL is a confusing situation to figure out as we head into uncertain labor times. The current Collective Bargaining Agreement is set to expire in March. But the current CBA allows teams to apply the franchise tag in February.

The franchise tag would then be applied during the 2011 season...except, there is no 2011 season without a new CBA. The NFL and the NFLPA have been quiet on how the franchise tag would work next month.

On Thursday, the NFL hosted a few reporters including Gregg Rosenthal of Pro Football Talk who reports the league expects the franchise tag to be available in February.

Previously, reports had said the league advised teams not to use the franchise tag until further notice.

We’ll see how the next CBA handles this but it appears the franchise tag, or a similar concept, will make its way in there.
