2011 Super Bowl: Green Bay Packers Aren’t Lucky, They’re Good

Bill Parcells made famous the line, “You are what your record says you are.” While that’s the case, the Green Bay Packers could make an argument that they’re better than their record says they are. The Packers lost six games in the 2010 regular season. Of those six losses, the biggest margin was by a whopping...four points.

Yes, when the Packers lost, it was a very, very close game. That’s something to keep in mind as we enter the 2011 Super Bowl against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

While the Packers were considered underdogs because they were a sixth seed in the playoffs, their run to the Super Bowl isn’t actually a surprise. As SB Nation’s Acme Packing Company points out, records and seeds mean very little.

So, don't believe records and seeds. They tell you next to nothing. All that someone could imply from the Packers' record is they either lost their composure in some close games...or got really unlucky. Watching football teams with your own eyes and forming your own opinions about their play is probably the best way to measure a team's quality, but detailed statistics and Vegas odds tell the story much better than team records and seeds.

The Packers were in a coinflip situation against the Eagles in the wildcard round and favored to beat both the Falcons and Bears after that -- as a sixth seed. So they were hardly the underdogs.

Check out Acme Packing Company for more on the Packers leading up to the game.
