At Qwest Field on Saturday, the New Orleans Saints immediately set to work on validating their status as heavy favorites, but the Seahawks’ defense showed some resistance. The Saints managed a field goal on their opening drive to take a 3-0 lead.
Seahawks Vs. Saints: New Orleans Strikes First, Leads 10-0
The Saints were granted great field position when the Seahawks’ Olindo Mare booted the opening kickoff out of bounds. New Orleans marched downfield without being pushed to a third down until getting deep in Seattle territory. At home, the Seahawks’ defense held, and the Saints resorted to a Garrett Hartley field goal.
On the ensuing Seahawks possession, quarterback Matt Hasselbeck was intercepted in a 3rd-and-1 situation. Once again, Saints quarterback Drew Brees and company set to work, driving near the Seahawks’ end zone. Seattle very nearly accomplished another red-zone stop, but a pass interference call on 3rd-and-3 gave New Orleans new life, and Brees promptly found Heath Evans in the end zone.
The Saints now lead, 10-0, with just over six minutes left in the first quarter. The Seahawks are set to receive the ball.
