Jets Vs. Dolphins: Brandon Marshall Talked Big, Darrelle Revis Played Bigger

Dolphins receiver Brandon Marshall vowed to play with so much passion against the Jets that he'd the he'd get ejected from the game. Instead, Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis ejected Marshall from the red zone.

Matt Moore targeted Marshall three times in the end zone, and all three times Revis’ defense was key in preventing Marshall from scoring, forcing two drops (watch drop No. 1, and drop No. 2) before eventually snagging an interception and returning it 100 yards for a touchdown. Revis spoke about his pick six after the game. From Mike Vaccaro of the New York Post:

“You’re taught to head for the nearest sideline when you pick one off,” Revis said. “But I looked up, saw there were a couple of Dolphins heading for the sidelines, so I made a move inside. And when I did, you could’ve driven an 18-wheeler the rest of the way.”

Marshall certainly made his share of big plays -- his six catches and 109 yards were easily the most of any player in the game -- but he couldn’t make them when they counted. In addition to being shut out of the end zone, he also dropped a critical third-down catch early in the fourth quarter when Miami still trailed by only two scores that all but killed Miami’s slim chances for a comeback.

The play was originally ruled a catch, but it was overturned when the Jets challenged the play. Revis said he knew all along it wasn’t a catch -- and he told Marshall as much on the field. From Jane McManus of ESPN:

“We had about 30 conversations, TV timeouts,” Revis said. “The one play where me and him got tangled up with the ball we were talking then, he was like ‘That’s a catch,‘ and I said ‘No, that’s not a catch it hit the ground,’ and I said I had my hand on it. He was laughing then. It was good, it was good competition it’s always good to play against Brandon.”

After the game, Marshall had little to say, apparently forgetting how to speak in the first person. From the NY Post:

“We’re just not making plays,” Marshall said. “Guys just aren’t playing well. At the end of the day, we just didn’t get it done.”
