Detroit Lions starting running back Jahvid Best is out for Sunday's game against the Atlanta Falcons with a concussion, already his second of the 2011 NFL season. This has the Lions (5-1) concerned because the speedy Best has been an intricate part to their offensive success.
Jahvid Best Injury: Lions RB Ruled Out As Expected
Head coach Jim Schwartz says Best will play when given medical clearance but given the severity of concussions, it’s been in question whether Best could even return this season.
According to Detroit offensive co-ordinator Scott Linehan, the all-purpose back will return to action this season but optimism is expected from the coaching staff. As it stands, the second-year back out of Cal will be evaluated on a week to week basis.
At this point, having sustained multiple concussions on the year and yet to be halfway through the season, he should consider his future. Best will certainly want to be there for his teammates but it would be advisable for him to consider sitting the season. Elite players like Ed Reed have made it public that their health comes first, and Peyton Manning's status is a living example. Best could be a tremendous contributor to any NFL team, if he could manage to stay healthy.
In addition to Best's injury, his backup Jerome Harrison recently discovered a brain tumor that will remove him from this season. Detroit will be leaning on runningbacks Maurice Morris and Keiland Williams to get their ground game going, but neither have the athletic tools Best brings to Detroit.
