The New Orleans Saints have had one of the most potent offenses in the NFL ever since quarterback Drew Brees and head coach Sean Payton united in the Bayou. During their Sunday Night Football Game, the Saints nearly set an NFL record for most points scored in a single game.
New Orleans Saints Scoring Output Nearly Sets NFL Record
The Saints scored 62 points while limiting the Colts to a single touchdown, just eleven points shy of the NFL record 73 points the Bears scored in the 1940 NFL Championship game. New Orleans had plenty of chances to reach that record, however, as they scored their final touchdown with over 12 minutes left in the game before deciding to bench Brees in favor of back-up Chase Daniel.
To put the Saints scoring output into perspective:
- New Orleans' 62 point total on Sunday night was two points more than the highest combined score in Sunday's other NFL games as the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings scored 60 points total.
- The Saints scored nearly seven times as many points as Sunday's lowest combined total, a 6-3 game between the Cleveland Browns and Seattle Seahawks.
- The St. Louis Rams have scored 56 points through their first six games of the season. Yes, that's six less than points than the Saints scored on Sunday night alone.
- Last, but not least, the Saints 62-point total was the highest output since the 1985 New York Jets hung 62 points on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
It's difficult to say exactly what the big game for the Saints means as it follows up a stinker against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but it probably won't be easy to replicate considering Drew Brees threw more touchdowns than incompletions (five to four), both Jimmy Graham and Marques Colston pulled in a pair of touchdown catches and it took the Saints 30 offensive plays before they even had to attempt a third down conversion -- it was converted, too, when Graham caught a pass from Brees.
The Saints might not finish the season with a run to the Super Bowl, and maybe the Colts defense is just terrible, but it sure seemed like something special was happening at the Superdome on Sunday night.
