Jahvid Best Injury: Lions RB Not Expected To Play Week 8

After missing last week's game after sustaining his second concussion of the 2011 league year, Detroit Lions running back Jahvid Best did not practice on Wednesday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.

The Lions are being cautious with Best, a 2010 first-round pick whose college career was ended due to a concussion. Lions head coach Jim Schwartz would not provide a timetable for Best’s return to the backfield, noting that concussions differ from structural injuries that have more standardized timetables for recovery.

“I sort of press a button when I start talking about concussions,” Schwartz said according to Anwar Richardson of MLive.com. “Every one is different. Some guys respond differently. You can’t put any of them in a box. You can’t say -- we, as coaches, we always do -- ‘Hey, it’s a high ankle sprain. How long do you expect the guy to be out?’, or it’s a hamstring, or it’s a shoulder. You sort of have a general idea (of a recovery time).

“With (concussions), you have to be objective and we’re going to follow recommendations that doctors give us, and as soon as we can, we’re going to get him on the field.”

With Maurice Morris and Keiland Williams splitting carries in place of Best, the Lions ran for 104 yards on 20 attempts in Week 7's 23-16 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. The Lions travel to the Denver Broncos, whose defense ranks 18th against the run.
