Troy Polamalu got away with this, so I'm not sure if it was a heads-up play or luck that came about due to bad officiating. As Tom Brady dropped back to pass in the fourth quarter of Sunday's matchup between the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers, he was stripped, with the ball bouncing to the turf just out of everyone's reach. As players from both teams converged on the loose ball, Polamalu slid in from out of nowhere to bat the ball a good 20 yards backwards.
VIDEO: Tom Brady Fumbles, Troy Polamalu Bats The Ball Out Of The End Zone
It just so happened the back of the end zone was about 20 yards away, and the ball bounced out of bounds for a safety.
Except it shouldn’t have been a safety. Polamalu’s bat was illegal, and should’ve resulted in a penalty. All’s well that ends well for the Steelers, I guess.
