Terrell Owens Fakes Retirement In Bizarre ESPN Interview

Surrounded by his family, an emotional Terrell Owens discussed his health and recent personal problems with Stephen A. Smith during an ESPN interview. And then, as the camera dramatically zooms in on his face, Owens says he's done -- retired.

A somewhat surprised Smith asked a follow-up question while prodding for the reasons before Owens lamented, “I wish today was April 1st, April Fools, because I just got you.” The bizarre sequence of events, and awkward interview, was part of a conversation that served more as a plea for a team to pick Owens up, with the false retirement statement serving as the attention-grabber.

Watch for yourself after the jump.

No clue what the plan here, but the whole setup was weird. Owens’ family sits silently as he talks about being burned by a financial planner and undergoing stem cell treatment on his injured knee after the initial gag. I guess the takeaway is that Owens is almost ready to come back to football or something.

Always a showman, indeed.
