NFL Scores, Week 5: 49ers Blast Bucs, 48-3

Alex Smith and the resurgent 49ers throttled the Bucs by the bay, winning 48-3 in one of the most lopsided games of the 2011 NFL season.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were one of the success stories of the 2010 NFL season. In San Francisco in Week 5, the Bucs ran right into the teeth of one of the 2011 NFL season's biggest surprises, and got walloped by the resurgent 49ers, 48-3.

Alex Smith threw for three touchdowns, two to Vernon Davis. Frank Gore ran for 125 yards and a touchdown. Carlos Rogers picked off a Josh Freeman pass and returned it for a touchdown. The Niners led 21-3 after the first quarter and never let up, rolling up almost over 400 yards, notching 28 first downs, and punting just once.

San Francisco’s success was a product of Tampa Bay’s misery. Freeman threw two interceptions and completed just 17 of 33 passes, the Bucs rushed for just 83 yards, and nine penalties for 96 yards just exacerbated the pain.

With the win, the 49ers move to 4-1 on the season, while the Bucs fall to 3-2 with the loss.
