Raiders Vs. Chargers, Thursday Night Football: No Pass Interference On Punt Formations

The Oakland Raiders got the football first, but promptly went three-and-out as quarterback Carson Palmer missed on his first two passes and running back Michael Bush was stuff at the line of scrimmage. On the ensuing punt, the San Diego Chargers employed a little bit of trickaration and threw a lateral to Marcus Gilchrist, who returned the ball 40 yards, giving the Chargers excellent field position.

The Chargers then went right down the field with Ryan Mathews picking up 19 yards on a pass reception, but the drive stalled out. The Chargers wound up kicking a field goal to go up 3-0. On the Raiders next drive, Michael Bush kicked off a 44-yard run, but the after that the Raiders drive stalled. With kicker Sebastian Janikowski nursing a hamstring injury, his range was limited. The Raiders lined up to punt, but Shane Lecher passed the ball deep down the field to Denarius Moore, who was ran out of bounds by Quentin Jammer.

According to the umpire, if a team is lined up in punt formation, pass interference cannot be called. The Raiders were lined up in punt formation, so there was no interference being called. The rule is in place so that it prevents teams from just running fake punts constantly and picking up cheap pass interference calls.
