Bears Sign Josh McCown As Chiefs Claim Kyle Orton

The Chicago Bears lost out to the Chiefs for Kyle Orton. Instead, they signed Josh McCown as a backup.

The Kansas City Chiefs claimed quarterback Kyle Orton off waivers on Wednesday afternoon, using their higher waiver priority to beat out the Chicago Bears. Without Orton, Chicago opened the envelope for Plan B, which involved signing free agent quarterback Josh McCown, according to the team's official Twitter account.

McCown had been in consideration prior to the Chiefs' claim of Orton, according to ESPN Chicago. In fact, he was actually on the Bears' radar last year. McCown will most likely be the backup to Caleb Hanie, though that could change based on results.

McCown is familiar with Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz, having been a backup to Jon Kitna with the Lions in 2006 when Martz was the offensive coordinator. McCown was in training camp with the San Francisco 49ers this year but did not make the final roster. He has been coaching high school football ever since.
