Bills linebacker Shawne Merriman took to Twitter to defend his teammate Stevie Johnson at halftime of the Bills vs. Jets game on Sunday. Johnson provided one of the must-see highlights with his TD celebration (click for video) mocking Jets wide receiver Plaxico Burress and Santonio Holmes.
Shawne Merriman Offers To Split Fine For Stevie Johnson TD Celebration
The celebration mocked Burress, who accidentally shot himself in the leg at a New York nightclub three years ago. The actions could be considered in bad taste and it’s possible that Johnson will be issued a fine from the league.
If that happens, Merriman says he’ll be there for his teammate. He tweeted the following:
Never tweet during the game but what @StevieJohnson13 did was disrespectful & not needed & should never happen in the #NFL so ill pay half the fine HA!
People need a sense of humor other than us being behind right now that celebration was funny #GoBills
Merriman could receive a fine himself for tweeting during the game. Last season, the NFL fined Chad Ochocinco $25,000 for in-game tweeting. However, as the New York Daily News points out, Merriman is on the injured reserve, and might not be subject to the same rule.
