My favorite part about the Internet Era is that even with thousands of people dedicated to scouting and predicting every inch of sports, 24 hours-a-day and 7 days-a-week, superstars still, somehow, come out of nowhere. There’s some message about knowledge vs. the unknowable in there, but that’s beside the point.
Long Live LeSean McCoy, The Human Surprise Party
The point is LeSean McCoy, the second round pick for the Philadelphia Eagles who was brought in to back up Brian Westbrook. A few years later, he’s the closest thing we’ve seen to Barry Sanders since Barry Sanders. As Eric Freeman pointed out last weekend, he’s everything everyone expected from Reggie Bush. And it’s all even better, because we never had to swallow a gallon of hype, so it’s still a little surprising every time he does something incredible. Like, “Oh hey wow, didn’t realize we were watching Barry Sanders 2.0 tonight.”
Even when he’s running, it looks like he’s cornered for three yards, and then BOOM, he’ll make a move that gives him eight. Every time he touches the ball is a new opportunity for something special. All of which is to say, the Eagles may be losing this year, but not because of LeSean McCoy, far and away the most exciting running back in football right now.
