The Albert Haynesworth era is over with the New England Patriots. The team released the veteran defensive tackle on Tuesday, the Boston Herald reports. Haynesworth signed with the Patriots shortly after the lockout ended but hardly made an impact in his short time in New England.
Albert Haynesworth Released By New England Patriots
The Patriots released veteran defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth just two days after he was apparently benched and had a sideline confrontation with an assistant coach.
The timing of the release is interesting because Haynesworth had an animated conversation with defensive line coach Pepper Johnson last Sunday.
In the third quarter of the loss to the Giants, Haynesworth was blocked on a play that allowed Giants RB Brandon Jacobs to scamper through for a 10-yard touchdown. Haynesworth came off the field and had a "heated" exchange with Johnson but after the game Bill Belichick brushed off questions about Haynesworth's role saying his absence was rotation related.
Haynesworth was traded from the Washington Redskins to the Patriots for a 2013 fifth round pick. He reportedly re-worked his contract to a two-year, $8.7 million deal with the Patriots after signing a seven year, $100 million deal with the Redskins in the 2009 free agency period.
