Albert Haynesworth Claimed By Tampa Bay Buccaneers Off Waiver Wire

The New England Patriots waived DT Albert Haynesworth on Tuesday and immediately speculation began as to who, if anyone, would claim him off the waiver wire. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, that team is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who now acquire Haynesworth (and his contract).

The deadline to claim Haynesworth was 4:00 p.m. (ET) Wednesday afternoon. There were reports that a few teams -- like the Philadelphia Eagles -- would not be claiming him despite some speculation that they might.

The Bucs picking him up actually makes some sense on one hand because they just lost DT Gerald McCoy for the season but on the other hand Haynesworth hasn't been effective since the 2008 season so it might be wishful thinking that he'll be productive in Tampa.

The Bucs were one of the teams involved in the bidding for Haynesworth during the 2009 free agency period but he ultimately chose the Redskins.

Haynesworth had restructured his contract before joining the Patriots to the tune of two years, $8.7 million.

Check out SB Nation’s Bucs Nation where Tampa Bay fans are wondering how they’ll use the 6’6”, 335-pound defensive tackle.
