In an interesting turn of events, the MInnesota Vikings have decided to release veteran QB Donovan McNabb, who was traded to Minnesota shortly after the lockout ended in July. This means McNabb is subject to the waiver wire where every team -- from worst to best record -- will have a shot at claiming him (and his contract).

According to reports, McNabb requested his release from the team.

The Vikings, 2-9, could be making a cost-cutting move here. Any team claiming McNabb on the waiver wire will pick up the $1.5 million remaining on his contract. Sort of like the Kyle Orton scenario last week, we could see teams put a claim in on him. Two that come to mind are the Texans, who are down to rookie T.J. Yates, and the Bears, who lost Jay Cutler for what might be the entire season.

McNabb entered Minnesota as the starter but after a disappointing start to the season the team moved on to rookie Christian Ponder.

McNabb was originally a second overall pick in the 1999 NFL draft and played 11 years in Philadelphia before getting shipped to Washington before the 2010 season. From there, he was traded to Minnesota shortly before the 2011 season.
