Qualcomm Stadium will be called Snapdragon Stadium on Sunday night when the Chargers host the Ravens for the prime time game. Why exactly is the place called Snapdragon Stadium?

Qualcomm Stadium was renamed on Friday. For ten days the home of the San Diego Chargers will officially be called Snapdragon Stadium. The new name gives wireless chip-maker Qualcomm some prime advertising for its new Snapdragon processor found in hundreds of cell phones.

The name change takes advantage of three major football games happening at the facility. On Sunday night, the Chargers host the Baltimore Ravens for the NFL's Week 15 Sunday Night Football game on NBC. Following that two college bowl games will be played there. On Dec. 21, Louisiana Tech and TCU face off in the Poinsettia Bowl. On Dec. 28, the Cal plays Texas in the Holiday Bowl. Both of the bowl games will be featured on ESPN. The combined television audience for all three games is estimated at 30 million viewers.

The changes to the stadium are cosmetic. New signage was installed throughout the venue, strategically placed to maximize national television exposure.

Chargers president Dean Spanos noted the historical significance of the name change in an interview with the San Diego Union Tribune. “This is a first-of-its-kind effort to completely rename a stadium without changing naming rights,” said Spanos.
