An interesting development occurred this week when the Washington Post and Mike Freeman of CBSSports.com reported that there was concern among the NFLPA regarding executive director DeMaurice Smith. Specifically, there was concern regarding $1 million bonus reportedly due to him, and whether he would receive it.
NFLPA’s DeMaurice Smith Receives $1 Million Bonus
The NFLPA voted this week to award executive director DeMaurice Smith a $1 million bonus, according to a report.
Freeman made the case last week that Smith deserved the bonus and now he reports that the executive committee has voted to award him the bonus.
“The Executive Committee of the NFLPA stands firmly united behind Executive Director DeMaurice Smith and what has been accomplished under his leadership,” read an NFLPA statement obtained by me. “Today, we made an affirmative decision on his discretionary compensation. We look forward to having him serve our membership long into the future.”
Smith navigated the players through the NFL lockout which ended up costing just one preseason game (the first one). The players conceded on several issues but won on several key ones like health benefits and securing a good portion of future TV revenues.
Smith is up for re-election in March so the bonus is timely. It’s a sign that the players’ leadership is behind Smith, which might bode well for him in March.
