The Washington Redskins waived running back Ryan Torain on Tuesday, according to a report on ESPN 980. A year after leading the team in rushing with 724 yards, averaging 4.5 yards per carry average, the running back had fallen into a backup role after breaking his hand during training camp.

Torain was not without his moments this year, though. He rushed for 135 yards on 19 carries in Week 4 against the St. Louis Rams. But he has been almost completely invisible since then. The following week he rushed for 22 yards on 10 carries and has accumulated just 65 rushing yards on 40 carries since that Week 4 performance.

Torain had fallen so far, in fact, that he was inactive for two consecutive weeks leading up to last Sunday's game. After injuries to Tim Hightower and Roy Helu, Torain served as Evan Royster's backup against the Minnesota Vikings.
