NFL Week 16, Best And Worst: From Record Breaking To Pregame Fights

The 49ers defense amazingly had not allowed a rushing touchdown throughout the first 15 weeks of the 2011 season. That's pretty incredible and it would have been even more incredible if they went through an entire season without allowing one. The problem with that is they had to face Marshawn Lynch and the Seattle Seahawks on the road in Week 16. Lynch had scored touchdowns in seven out of the last eight games. After a blocked punt late in the fourth quarter, Lynch took a handoff, bounced outside and was able to fight off a couple 49ers defenders to get into the end zone.

The last time the Detroit Lions were in the playoffs Bill Clinton was the president of the United States. With a 38-10 win over the San Diego Chargers, the Detroit Lions have locked a spot in the post season. Matthew Stafford threw for 373 yards and three touchdowns on the way to a Lions victory and at the end Jim Schwartz was given a nice gatorade bath.

In the process of the 49ers 19-17 win over a good Seattle Seahawks team, David Akers kicked four field goals to give him 42 on the season. Not only did his four field goals help hang on to the No. 2 overall seed (for now at least) in the NFC, but Akers set the single season record for most field goals made. The record was previously held by Neil Rackers from the 2005 season. It goes to show that teams with solid defenses, great special teams and mediocre offenses can still win in the NFL.

Dan Marino threw for 5,084 yards in 1984. Nobody has been able to throw for that many yards until this past week. On Monday night, in the process of the Saints win over the Atlanta Falcons that secured the division, Drew Brees passed Marino with 5,087 yards on the season. He now holds the single-season record for the most passing yards.

In the second quarter of the Bengals' Week 16 win over the Arizona Cardinals, quarterback Andy Dalton found wide receiver Jerome Simpson open in the flat and what happened next defied all logic and physics. It's impossible to explain with words. Just watch.

At one point in the Giants Week 16 win over the Jets, Giants running back Brandon Jacobs and Jets head coach Rex Ryan got into a war of words. I don't think anybody actually believes that Ryan's body could cash the checks that his mouth were writing, especially when he was facing one of the biggest backs in the NFL, but I also don't think anybody could also turn away from that fight.

The Eagles beat the Cowboys in a meaningless game on Saturday. They were eliminated from playoff contention earlier that day and their win over the Cowboys didn't mean anything to Dallas. The Eagles have won four of the last six games and three in a row against good teams. If they had played this way in the beginning of the year they would have won enough games to be fighting for a playoff position and probably win the NFC East.

The Chiefs scored a last-minute touchdown against the Raiders to force overtime and had all the momentum. Unfortunately that momentum was taken away from them in one play. The Raiders won the coin toss (which pretty much meant they won the game due to the NFL's stupid overtime rules) and on the first play, Carson Palmer hit Darrius Heyward-Bey on a 67-yard bomb.

Tim Tebow is in everybody's home right now. Even if you want to get away from him, you can't because every single person who has ever been on TV is talking about him right now. Tebow hasn't been a great quarterback but he did lead his team to six straight wins before losing to the Patriots in Week 15. The last two games of the season are important for the Broncos to win if they want to hold on the AFC West and head to the playoffs.

Unfortunately for Denver, their Week 16 game against the Bills ended the exact opposite way of what they needed. Tebow threw four interceptions in Buffalo including two back-to-back pick sixes that pretty much sealed the Broncos' fate.
