With his second touchdown of the game giving him 12 rushing touchdowns this season, Cam Newton tied Steve Grogan’s record for most in a NFL season. Grogan set his record in 1976 and scored 35 rushing touchdowns during his 16-season NFL career. The touchdown gave the Carolina Panthers a 31-12 lead over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Newton has also thrown a touchdown, while going 8 of 14 for 153 yards. He now has 24 touchdowns combined this season.
Grogan was one of the top scrambling quarterbacks during his heyday. He once rushed for more than 300 yards for four straight seasons (1976-1979), a period in which he scored 20 of his rushing touchdowns.
Grogan was not nearly as good of a passer during that time, though. He threw more interception than touchdowns in three of those four seasons and only threw for more than 3,000 yards in one of those seasons.
By the time Sunday’s game is over, Newton will likely to have passed for more yards than Grogran did during any of those seasons.
