VIDEO: Rob Gronkowski Breaks NFL Tight End Touchdown Record, Except He Doesn’t

Records are being broken in the NFL today. In New England, tight end Rob Gronkowski scored his third touchdown of the game, as the Patriots continue to dismantle the hapless Colts. That last touchdown gives Gronkowski a total of 14 touchdowns for the season, a new single-season record for NFL tight ends.

Previously, the record was held by Vernon Davis of the San Francisco 49ers and Antonio Gates of the San Diego Chargers, who each scored 13 touchdowns in 2009 and 2004, respectively.

New England is playing the Colts, so Gronkowski might not be done scoring today. He has caught five passes for 64 yards. A number of teams did not want to risk a draft pick on Gronkowski in the 2010 NFL Draft, after a bad back kept him out of action in Arizona.

Gronkowski’s third touchdown was ruled a lateral, which still gives him a total of 14 touchdowns for the season, but not the record for receiving touchdowns. He needs one more to break a three-way tie with Davis and Gates for the honor.

Here’s the video of Gronkowski’s would-be record-breaker.
