Rod Woodson Joins Oakland Raiders As Defensive Backs Coach

Rod Woodson has joined Hue Jackson’s Oakland Raiders staff as defensive backs coach, the team announced Monday. Woodson is a Pro Football Hall of Famer who played most of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens. He also has Bay Area connections, having played a handful of seasons for the Raiders and San Francisco 49ers.

Woodson is giving up an NFL Network gig to get back into the game. He’ll have the chance to work with a young, athletic defense, and has to be especially excited about having the chance to coach Nnamdi Asomugha, perhaps the NFL’s best cornerback, should the free agent choose to re-sign.

Woodson on returning to Oakland:

It’s an honor to be back with the Raiders and be able to talk to Raider players about true football. I’m looking forward to working with the organization and the challenges of the 2011 season.

The Raiders release calls him a “Raider Legend,” but seriously guys, he only played there for two years. Still, this is an impressive hire for Jackson, as plenty of young defensive backs around the league grew up watching Woodson play.
