The Kansas City Chiefs have confirmed LB Tamba Hali received the franchise tag. The 2011 franchise tag number for linebackers is expected to be slightly over $10 million. The news doesn’t come as a surprise as many expected the Chiefs to place the tag on him.
Kansas City Chiefs Announce Franchise Tag For LB Tamba Hali
The good news for Chiefs fans is that Hali isn’t expected to be going anywhere. GM Scott Pioli confirmed in a release issued by the team that they’re hoping to strike a long-term contract with him.
"Tamba is a key contributor to our football team, and we have a tremendous amount of respect for him both personally and professionally," General Manager Scott Pioli said. "We want Tamba to remain a member of the Chiefs, and we will continue to work together with the hope of reaching a long-term agreement."
We’re not sure yet if it’s the exclusive or non-exclusive variety of the franchise tag. If it’s non-exclusive, Hali can speak with other teams but, either way, he’s not expected to leave Kansas City.
We’re also not sure how the current labor situation fits into all this. The Chiefs could be waiting for a new labor deal to be completed before signing Hali.
