News surfaced on Tuesday morningthat the Carolina Panthers would not use the franchise tag on RB DeAngelo Williams. They were reportedly deciding to use the franchise tag on C Ryan Kalil or DE Charles Johnson.
Ryan Kalil Will Receive Carolina Panthers Franchise Tag
According to Darin Gantt of the Charlotte Observer, they chose Kalil. Gantt notes that it keeps the strength of the Panthers strong.
It’s unclear where the two sides stand regarding a long-term contract. The franchise tag for offensive linemen is expected to be over $10 million so that’s a hefty price to pay for a center for one season.
The Panthers made Kalil a second round pick in the 2007 NFL draft and he’s lived up to expectations. He started 12 games in his second year, missing four due to injury, and nabbed a Pro Bowl spot as an alternate in each of the following two seasons.
Whether the franchise tag is valid remains to be seen. The NFL has told teams it can use the franchise tag right now but the NFLPA has said it’s meaningless without a new CBA, which expires on March 3rd.
